A visit to the Ortman Family Vineyards tasting room
At least a year ago, Mitch and I had dinner at a great restaurant in one of my favorite local hotels. It’s a seafood restaurant called Catch and it’s located in the Hotel Casa del Mar in Santa Monica (beachfront, of course). Sometimes when we go to nice restaurants we like to ask the waiter for a suggestion on the wine, since they usually know better than we do what the wines are like. Our fantastic waiter (who had an equa…

Ortman Family Wittstrom Vineyard Paso Robles Petite Sirah – 2006 – 9.0 - James Meléndez / Jaime Patricio Meléndez
Paso Robles is showing consistent high quality wines. This wine has a beautiful structure encapsulating honeyed and herbaceous notes with noticeable acid and finishing with scents of cedar and fallen leaves.

Wine is a snapshot in time. That’s the one truly unique thing about wine that perhaps draws so many into the wine business. Every vintage is unique, framed in large part by the weather patterns throughout the growing season. In a difficult vintage like 2008 this becomes glaringly obvious. As you can see, Mother Nature threw nea…

Best festival
Paso Robles Wine Festival in Paso Robles, Calif. This laid back, down-to-earth California town is the anti-Napa. On the third weekend in May, it holds what's billed as the state's largest outdoor wine-tasting event, where $55 gets you unlimited samples from more than 100 producers. Book a room at the cozy Hotel Cheval (www.hotelcheval.com) for this year's fest May 15-17 or head over March 20-22 for the town's equally lauded Zinfandel Festiv…

December 9, 2008 by vegasrenie (Check me out!)
Other than the trip to San Jose for A Taste of Paso Wines in August, my only other trip to wine country this year was to Paso Robles in early spring, where I enjoyed the budding of new (vine) life while I was there with the California Contingent of Rod my Wineaux Guy, his sister Bunny, and her friend Don. My intrepid group and I visited our winery friends while there and enjoyed every moment.
And it was much the same thi…
